Black Tiger Shrimp

Black Tiger Shrimp’s scientific name is Penaeus monodon, also known as the Giant tiger prawn, Asian tiger shrimp and many other names. It is a marine crustacean that is widely reared for food mostly in South Asia. Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, Indonesia and few other countries are cultivating this species in commercial scale.

Penaeus monodon was first described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1798. That name was overlooked for a long time, until 1949 when Lipke Holthuis clarified to which species it referred. Holthuis also showed that P. monodon had to be the type species of the genus Penaeus.

In Bangladesh, Black Tiger Shrimp also known as Bagda chingri (Bengali: বাগদা চিংড়ি). Bangladesh holds the GI certificate for this species of Shrimp.
