Climate change pertains to prolonged alterations in temperature and weather conditions. These shifts can occur naturally, as a result of variations in solar activity or significant volcanic eruptions. However, since the 1800s, human activities have become the primary catalyst for it, primarily stemming from the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas.
The burning of fossil fuels generates emissions of greenhouse gases, which function like a blanket enveloping the Earth. This “blanket” traps the sun’s heat and consequently raises global temperatures.
The primary culprits among greenhouse gases responsible for driving climate change are carbon dioxide and methane. These gases are released when we use gasoline to power our vehicles, heat buildings with coal, or engage in deforestation activities. Major sources of methane emissions include agriculture, oil and gas operations. Various sectors, including energy, industry, transportation, construction, agriculture, and land use, contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, thereby fueling climate change.
