Flood devastates 1,500 fish farms in Habiganj, causing significant losses

A severe flood in Habiganj, triggered by heavy rainfall and the onrush of water from upstream, has caused devastating losses to the local aquaculture industry. Approximately 1,500 fish farms have been washed away, resulting in damages worth an estimated USD 0.84 million.

Md Wahidur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Habiganj District Fisheries Office, reported that around 537 thousand tons of Carp-like fish and 30 million small fishes of various species were swept away by the floodwaters.

According to sources from the District Fisheries Directorate, the flood’s impact was widespread across the region:

  • Habiganj Sadar Upazila: Approximately 900 fish farms affected
  • Nabiganj Upazila: 250 farms affected
  • Madhabpur Upazila: 200 farms affected
  • Chunarughat Upazila: 82 farms affected
  • Bahubal Upazila: 35 farms affected
  • Shayesthaganj Upazila: 20 farms affected

As a result, around 516 fish farmers in the region have been severely affected by the flooding, facing significant challenges in rebuilding their livelihoods. The local authorities are assessing the damage and considering potential support measures for the impacted farmers.
