Albert Heijn, one of the largest grocery chains in the Netherlands, has introduced a new line of sustainable shrimp that not only have a lower environmental impact but also adhere to higher animal welfare standards. This exciting development is the result of a collaboration between several key players in the seafood industry, including shrimp importer Klaas Puul, Skretting, Veramaris, Protix, and Cofimar, an Ecuador-based shrimp farm.
The partnership has successfully developed an innovative shrimp feed, crafted by Skretting Ecuador specifically for Cofimar. This feed incorporates alternative ingredients such as Veramaris algal oil and Protix insect meal. By using these non-traditional ingredients, the consortium has significantly reduced the marine footprint typically associated with shrimp farming. Additionally, the shrimp are ASC-certified, which means they are raised under strict guidelines that ensure high standards of animal welfare and sustainability throughout the farming process.
These sustainably farmed shrimp are now available in Albert Heijn stores across the Netherlands, reflecting the supermarket chain’s strong commitment to environmental responsibility and better treatment of farmed animals. Shoppers can feel good about their purchase, knowing that the shrimp they buy are produced in a way that minimizes harm to the environment and promotes ethical farming practices.
Emiel Beekwilders, the Quality Manager for Meat, Seafood, and Cheese at Albert Heijn, emphasized the importance of this collaboration. He stated, “Working with Veramaris, Skretting, Klaas Puul, Cofimar, and Protix not only advances sustainable aquaculture but also provides our customers with healthier and more environmentally friendly choices.” This statement highlights Albert Heijn’s dedication to offering products that are both good for consumers and the planet.
Looking ahead, the consortium is eager to expand its reach by partnering with other retailers. Their goal is to make these sustainable shrimp more widely available, thereby encouraging the entire seafood industry to adopt greener and more responsible farming practices. By setting this example, Albert Heijn and its partners hope to drive positive change and promote sustainability on a larger scale.
The introduction of sustainable shrimp at Albert Heijn marks a significant step forward in eco-friendly food production. It demonstrates how collaboration and innovation can lead to more responsible and sustainable shrimp choices in the marketplace, benefiting both consumers and the environment.
