In the month of October, 61 shrimp containers have been exported through Mongla port of Khulna, Bangladesh. October is another month in a row that shows the decline in the shrimp export from Bangladesh. EBP, the Export Promotion Bureau of Bangladesh had set the target of US $328 million from the frozen shrimp export for the year 2023-2024, which is now seemingly far fetched at the end of the Q1.

EBP’s target for the month of October was US $27.78 million, though the frozen shrimp fetched US $24.49 million for the month, a US $3.29 million short from the target. It was considered FY22-23 was a tough year for the shrimp sector, apparently FY23-24 appearing even tougher for the industry. Same month in last fiscal year earning from frozen shrimp was US $31.21 million which is US $6.72 million more from the current fiscal year. No wonder that declining demand and price attributed to the current situation at this extent for the sector.

In the September 2023, there has been 80 consignment took place; out of these, one was soft shell crab and rest are shrimp container shipped out from the Khulna zone. The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) of Bangladesh set the target of US $328 million for the FY 23-24 from frozen shrimp export.

In the month of September 2023, the target was US $24.53 million to achieve the yearly target, though by the end of the month, total earning is trailing short of US $2.19 million and it is US $22.34 million.

During the month of August total 107 shrimp shipment has been made from the Khulna zone. Apart from the shrimps, there were few soft shell crab and a Pomfret consignment in the month of August 2023.

For the month of August, the target was US $25.76 million in pursuit of yearly total US $328 million set by the EBP (Export Promotion Bureau) of Bangladesh and US $24.88 has achieved during this month. Which is fell short of US $0.88 million from the target.

July, the first month of fiscal year 2023-2024 and total 72 shrimp consignment took place from the Khulna zone. For the ongoing fiscal year, the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) of Bangladesh has set a target of achieving $328 million in earnings from the export of frozen shrimp.

It is noteworthy that in the previous fiscal year, the set target was $500 million for frozen shrimp export earnings, but the actual earnings amounted to $300.38 million. This discrepancy represents a 39% shortfall from the EPB’s target and a substantial decrease of 26.27% compared to the fiscal year 2021-2022.

June, the last month of the fiscal year 2022-2023 has total 88 shrimp container exported from the Khulna region.

In FY 2021-22, according to the Khulna Fish Inspection and Quality Control (KFIQC) office, this region exported 24,104 tons of Bagda shrimp (P. Monodon) and Galda shrimp (M. Rosenbergii), valued at US $30,71,27,717.

Considering the previous year exports trend, Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) of Bangladesh had set US $500 million export target for the frozen shrimp alone in FY 22-23.

In the month of May 2023, total 95 containers have been shipped out from the Khulna Zone. Out of the total, 5 containers were Soft Shell Crab and rest are mostly Black Tiger shrimp and others. For the month of May 2023, Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) set the target of USD 44.14 million to achieve USD 500 million of FY22-23, though total USD 16.6 million has been earned in the month of May. It was USD 21.96 million in the same period of the last FY21-22.

During the month of April 2023, there have been 65 containers shipped out from the Khulna region. Out of which, 57 were shrimp shipment. Rest are soft shell crabs and one freshwater fish shipment.
In the month of April 2023, EPB (Export Promotion Bureau) had targeted for $43.54 million from the shrimp export earnings. Though, in the month of April 2023, it was only $15.38 million from the shrimp export as per the EBP data. And it was $19.52 million during the same period of the last Fiscal year 2021-22 meaning April 2023 is short of $4.14 million from the previous year.

Total 88 consignment took place from the Khulna region during the month of March, out of them 86 were shrimp shipment.

Total 75 consignments were completed from the Khulna zone during the month of February 2023. Out of these 75 containers, 73 were shrimps.

In the month of February 2023, total $19.74 million has been earned from shrimp alone; where as, it was $18.34 million in the month of February 2022. So, it is $1.4 million more than the earlier fiscal year, though in terms of weight, it is way more than the last year February.

It has turned out obvious that the target of EPB’s (Export promotion Bureau) earning $500 million from frozen shrimp export alone is now a way far fetched target for this year.

During the month of January 2023, a total of 145 shipments of seafood were sent out from the Khulna region, with 140 of those shipments were of shrimp.

As per the Export Promotion Bureau’s (EPB) data, the frozen shrimp exports earned a total of $30.48 million, which is $14.74 million less than the targeted amount for the month of January 2023, to achieve the $500 million goal for the FY 22-23. This shortfall in earnings can be attributed to the prevailing global economic situation.

Despite the shortfall, it is noteworthy that the earnings from shrimp exports in January 2023 surpassed the earnings from January 2022, which was $25.99 million. This difference in earnings is $4.49 million, and while it is not a cause for celebration, it raises the question of why there has been an increase in earnings.
